This Mental Health Legislation e-learning course provides some background and history to the mental health legislation in the UK.

You will explore the changes affecting organisations that were made as a result of the Mental Health Act 2007, and consider how the
Mental Health Act 2007 impacts on patients, their relatives and the wider community, as well as the safeguards that are in place.

Course Overview

At the end of the course, trainees will be able to:

  • Define mental disorder
  • Distinguish between what is and is not covered by the Mental Health Act
  • Explain the history and changes to the mental health legislation in the UK
  • Recognise what criteria must be met in relation to the appropriate treatment test
  • Identify what is meant by medical treatment
  • Recognise fundamental principles that must inform all decisions under the Act
  • Outline the changes that were made as a result of the Mental Health Act 2007
